Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has decided to offer a minimum broadband speed of 2 mbps to its subscribers from October 01, 2015 onwards without any hike in tariffs. The operator currently offers a top speed of 512 mbps. This move is part of the operator?s strategy to revive its operations which have suffered due to huge subscriber churn. BSNL lost about 17.8 million wireless and over 2 million wireline subscribers during March 2014 to March 2015.
Meanwhile, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India is also expected to redefine the definition of broadband speed, which currently stands at 512 kbps.
