According to the minister of state for communications and rural development, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is aiming to achieve nearly 98-99 per cent uptime across most of its services in the coming months. He added that the centre is taking steps to effectively address any manpower-related challenges faced by the state-run telecom operator.

The minister said both operational and financial parameters of BSNL are being closely monitored. Around 10 key operational indicators, including cable faults, mean time to repair and base transceiver station (BTS) uptime, are reviewed on a regular basis to ensure service reliability. He noted that in cases where service disruptions are linked to manpower constraints, circles have been granted full operational flexibility to readjust and deploy the required personnel.

Informing the Lok Sabha, the minister said that for the first time in BSNL’s history, the Ministry of Communications is reviewing the company’s performance circle-wise across the country in a structured manner. While he conducts monthly reviews, the union minister of communications undertakes quarterly assessments.

Further, with a view to strengthening BSNL and making it robust, competitive and viable, the government has already approved three revival packages for the telco amounting to approximately Rs 3.22 trillion.

Additionally, to improve network infrastructure and service quality, BSNL is implementing several government schemes, including the 4G Saturation Scheme, Border Out Post (BOP)/Border Intelligence Post (BIP) projects and Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) Phase-I upgradation, among others.
