The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has allocated 5G spectrum worth Rs 610 billion to Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), enabling the state-owned telecom operator to begin rolling out next-generation services.
With this allocation, BSNL now holds spectrum in key bands such as 700 megahertz (MHz) and 3300 MHz, essential for delivering 5G. Further, the telco plans to initially launch the service in select cities, beginning with Delhi, before expanding nationwide.
Additionally, in response to a parliamentary query, Minister of State for Communications Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani confirmed that spectrum in the 700 MHz, 3300 MHz, and 26 GHz bands has been reserved for BSNL to support its 5G deployment.
Furthermore, the government has also committed adequate funding to meet the telco’s capital expenditure requirements for the near future, with additional support expected as the 5G rollout scales.
