BSNL has commercially launched the country’s first mobile Wi-Max service in Kerala. The technology, capable of providing speeds of up to 37 Mbps, has been provided by Aviat Networks (formerly Harris Stratex). The technology is being deployed in a phased manner. In the first phase, 450 base transceiver stations (BTSs) will be set up to cover all the major cities, district headquarters and towns within the state at a projected cost of about Rs 1 billion. The second phase will involve the commissioning of another 450 BTSs in the remaining towns. BSNL has launched the service at a fixed monthly rental of Rs 999 under its Home Plan and Rs 1,999 under its Business Plan for bandwidth ranging from 512 kbps to 2 Mbps.
