
The Ministry of Communications and IT has stated that state-run telecom companies Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) are planning to install about 28,300 base transceiver stations (BTS) to enhance the capacity and coverage of their mobile services.
BSNL is planning to install 10,502 IP-based Node Bs (3G BTS) and 14,263 BTS as part of its phase VII mobile network expansion plan. Similarly, MTNL is planning to deploy a total of 3,526 2G and 3G BTSes. These equipments comprise 1,080 Node-Bs and 800 BTSs in the Delhi circle and 1,080 Node-Bs and 566 BTSs in the Mumbai circle.
The two companies are also planning to upgrade their high-speed packet access 3G network that currently supports 3.6 Mbps and 84 Kbps of download and upload speeds, respectively. BSNL and MTNL are aiming at offering download and upload speeds of 21.1 Mbps and 5.76 Mbps per sector in each node-B.
