According to the data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Bharti Airtel and Idea Cellular have registered an increase in their revenue market share (RMS) for the quarter-ending December 2012.
Both the operators have been focusing on data and reduced discounts offered to customers in their bid to increase revenues. On the other hand operators like Reliance Communications, Aircel and Uninor have registered a decline in their RMS.
Bharti Airtel accounted for 30.4 per cent share of the industry’s sales for September-December 2012 as compared to 29.9 per cent share in the corresponding period in 2011. According to the analysts, Bharti Airtel?s RMS had to be adjusted for the one-time gain in revenues in the second quarter of 2012 on account a dispute related to inter-connect usage charges before the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT). Therefore, the operator?s actual RMS in September 2012 declined by 28 basis points from 30.1 per cent in the quarter ended June 2012. Thus, the company?s RMS increased on an organic basis for the quarter ending December 2012. Further, following TDSAT?s order Bharti Airtel recognised revenues of about Rs 5.86 billion for the quarter ended September 2012.
The operator registered an increasing growth in regional markets like Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh (East) and Bihar. In these circles, the operator?s RMS on an average increased by more than 1.5 per cent. In Karnataka, the company?s RMS increased by 0.7 per cent, while its revenue market share in Andhra Pradesh declined by 1.1 per cent for the quarter ending December 2012.
For the period under review, Idea Cellular registered an increase of 20 basis points to take its RMS to 14.8 per cent. The company?s revenue market share increased by 65, 97 and 96 basis points in Maharashtra, Kerala and Madhya Pradesh circles, respectively.
Vodafone India?s RMS at the end of December 2012 stood at 22.5 per cent. It registered encouraging growth in circles like Assam, the Northeast, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. RCOM?s RMS declined from 8.1 per cent in the second quarter of 2012 to 7.9 per cent in the quarter-ending December 2012.
Tata Teleservices Limited and Aircel registered an RMS of 8.5 per cent and 5.2 per cent for the quarter-ending December 2012.
