Bharti Airtel has chalked out a plan to consolidate its position in Africa, say news reports. Currently, the operator has over 53.1 million customers across 17 African countries with average revenue per user at $6.8 per month.
For the quarter ended March 31, 2012, its African operations registered a loss of Rs 3.40 billion and revenues of Rs 53.87 billion.
Now, going forward, it is looking at generating annual revenues of $5 billion next year.
In fact, it has already earmarked $1 billion as capital expenditure in Africa for the 2013 financial year.
Prior to this, the operator posted its results for the quarter ended March 2012.
The company has reported a 28.2 per cent decline in its net profit to Rs 10.06 billion for the period under consideration.
The operator has attributed this decline to 3G licence fee amortisation (Rs 1.06 billion), 3G interest costs (Rs 840 million), losses caused by fluctuations in forex (Rs 1.32 billion) and tax provisions (Rs 1.98 billion).
Meanwhile, its total revenues grew by 15 per cent to Rs 187.29 billion.
