State-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is set to sign an agreement with Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Limited (BSCCL) in a bid to buy bandwidth from the latter which can help in providing services to the north east region (NER).
BSCCL has reportedly agreed to sell its unused bandwidth to BSNL for $1.2 million per annum. Initially, BSNL will buy 10 Gbps capacity, which will be increased to 40 Gbps over time. Once the agreement is signed, the execution of the project will take about six months. The optical fibre cables will be laid from Agartala and Dhaka and will be joined at the border. Once implemented, BSNL?s subscribers in the northeast region will be able to avail of higher data transmission speeds.
BSNL is also reportedly exploring venturing into South Africa by acquiring equity stakes in one of the country?s telecom service providers.
