As head of the energy SBU at Viom Networks, Ambikesh Pratap Singh is responsible for managing the end-to-end energy needs of the company, including the development of energy solutions, evaluation of existing systems and selection of partners for various operating models. He aims to make the energy vertical a stand-alone profit centre and has been a part of many innovative solutions that Viom has brought into its daily operations to optimise energy use while setting benchmarks for the tower industry.
Singh believes that alternative energy solutions will play a key role in addressing the issues related to diesel pilferage and maintenance, especially in remote areas. ?Over time, our knowledge about the various cost components of energy and its consumption has increased significantly. This will enable us to implement high efficiency technologies that are not only suitable for Indian climate conditions but also simple to maintain,? he says.
Singh thinks that the telecom tower industry will eventually move towards a phase of end-to-end energy management wherein energy service companies may be made anchor customers by tower companies in order to derive economies of scale and distribute additional energy to communities.
Singh joined Viom Networks in 2009 from Bharti Telesoft, the manufacturing arm of Bharti Airtel. Prior to this, he had worked across various industry verticals such as manufacturing and IT/ITeS. He began his career with the O.P. Jindal Group, as a manager for its steel division, Jindal Steel Limited. In 2000, he moved to the telecom and IT/ITeS sector, joining Bharti Airtel as a quality manager. Some of the other companies he has worked with are HeroITES, TeleTech India and Spanco BPO.
Singh says that his stint with Viom is one of the most challenging, yet fulfilling, periods of his career. However, he credits this to the learning he gained in various sectors over the years.
He believes in empowering his team and making them accountable. ?Recognising and awarding good work is equally important to have a motivated team,? he says.
Singh is an engineer from the SGS Institute of Technology and Science, Indore, and has done several certification courses on total productive maintenance, quality and environment management, and programme management. He attempts to maintain a work-life balance by utilising his leisure time in reading and meditating. A nature lover, he likes to capture its many moods through photography and likes to visit unexplored parts of the country.
