According to the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), in a submission to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) on August 07,2025, ambiguities in the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDP Act) regarding the processing of publicly available personal data could create challenges for artificial intelligence (AI) companies.
Furthermore, the industry association noted that these uncertainties will especially affect AI companies that rely on large datasets to train their models.
In conclusion, IAMAI urged the information technology (IT) ministry to amend the DPDP Act to remove barriers to the use of publicly available personal data for training or fine-tuning AI models. As an interim measure, it recommended that the central government can consider exempting data fiduciaries from the Act’s provisions when such entities are processing personal data solely for training or fine-tuning of AI models.
