
Alcatel-Lucent has won three cellular infrastructure contracts in Africa, Russia and the Middle East. The first is a $29 million contract with MTN Yemen, a subsidiary of the South African MTN Group, for the expansion of MTN Yemen’s GSM/EDGE network. The contract includes core and radio network equipment; a microwave transmission system along with network integration and deployment services; and radio network optimisation and managed services. The second is a $20 million order to update GSM networks for Unitel in Angola. The third contract is for Alcatel-Lucent’s latest generation of GSM/GPRS/EDGE radio equipment which has been purchased by the closed joint stock company SMARTS to upgrade and expand its existing wireless network in several parts of Russia. The implementation, which will be carried out in multiple phases, is expected to be completed by April 2008.
