Airtel Tanzania, a subsidiary of Bharti Airtel, has launched a cross-network money transfer service in Tanzania, in its partnership with global mobile operator, Tigo. This follows the agreement signed by Airtel and Tigo in June 2014 for providing mobile money transfer service among their networks in Tanzania.
Airtel Tanzania and Tigo customers will be able to avail of secured money-transfer services between the companies’ mobile money wallets. In this service, the off-net charges have been removed, which has lowered the cost of cash withdrawal.
This service is aimed at helping meet the challenges associated with financial exclusion in the country. The financial penetration in the country stood at 22 per cent in 2013, according to the Bank of Tanzania.
