Bharti Airtel is aiming to become a pan-India 5G operator in the long-term. Further, the telco added that the service will initially be available in urban areas of the country.
According to Gopal Vittal, chief executive officer (CEO), Bharti Airtel, “Any new technology typically starts in urban areas, because the price of the device is the constraint and those tend to be higher in the early years and slowly start getting massified.”
He added, that the telco sees a large opportunity in 2G to 4G migration in the country. In this regard, Vittal said that India has around 300 million feature phones that still can be upgraded.
Airtel is of the view that the 5G ecosystem is still nascent in India but 5G device shipments are growing very fast.
