According to secretary, Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY), artificial intelligence (AI) adoption and soon-to-be-commercialised semiconductor manufacturing units are reportedly expected to create new employment opportunities in India’s growing electronics sector by 2030. The official said the electronics sector already employs around 1.5 million people.
He mentioned that over the next five years, the broader electronics industry is expected to hire nearly 4.5 million individuals, with around 2 million already employed in the sector.
He also pointed to the electronics component manufacturing scheme (ECMS), launched by the Centre in 2025 to strengthen domestic component manufacturing and integrate India’s electronics ecosystem with global value chains. The ECMS segment is expected to generate over 0.14 million direct jobs by 2030-31. The segment currently employs close to 60,000 people.
He further said the government is working to reduce imports of high-value electronics components. On semiconductors, the official said that the government is closely monitoring developments and added that progress on semiconductor manufacturing facilities in India has been satisfactory, with commercial production expected to begin soon.
