The government has informed the parliament that it directed blocking of 9,849 accounts/URLs during 2020, under a specific provision of the Information Technology Act, 2000. This was significantly more than 3,635 accounts/URLs blocked in 2019.

Meanwhile, earlier in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018, the government had directed blocking of 471, 500, 633, 1,385 and 2,799 accounts/URLs, respectively.

This was done in response to some of the requests received from the concerned designated nodal officers of ministries and states, on specified grounds and following the due process.

With this, the government seeks to have an open, safe and trusted and accountable internet.
