Reliance Industries is reportedly considering a major push into the satellite communications sector, with potential investments running into billions of dollars. The move would place the Indian conglomerate in direct competition with global players such as Starlink and Amazon’s Project Kuiper.
The proposed satellite business is expected to operate under Jio Platforms. Six teams have reportedly been constituted to work on different aspects of the project, covering areas such as satellites, launches, payloads and user terminals. The initiative is aligned with the Indian government’s broader objective of building domestic capabilities in satellite communications, particularly in low earth orbit (LEO) constellations, amid growing concerns about dependence on foreign entities for critical infrastructure.
Further, Reliance has also initiated discussions with the Department of Telecommunications to facilitate orbital slot filings with the International Telecommunication Union, which is responsible for allocating satellite frequencies and orbital positions.
