The government of Karnataka has proposed a ban on social media use for children below the age of 16, citing growing concerns over digital addiction, online safety and excessive screen time among minors. If implemented, the state would be among the first in India to introduce such a restriction.
Presenting his 17th state budget, the chief minister of Karnataka announced the proposed measure while outlining a total budget outlay of Rs 4480.04 billion for the state’s growth and development. Karnataka, which is home to Bengaluru, widely known as India’s technology hub, has seen increasing debate around the impact of social media on young users.
Similarly, several other states have also been considering similar measures amid rising concerns over online safety, cyberbullying and excessive screen use among children. Earlier this year, the government of Andhra Pradesh explored the possibility of banning mobile phone use in schools, while the government of Goa said it was studying the option of restricting social media access for children below 16.
