The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is set to mandate the installation of vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication devices in all new cars, enabling real-time information sharing between vehicles to help prevent road accidents and reduce fatalities. As per ministry data, India recorded over 500,000 road accidents in 2023, resulting in more than 180,000 deaths.

Under this proposed framework, onboard units will be installed in vehicles to facilitate wireless data exchange between cars, allowing them to communicate critical information such as speed, braking and potential collision risks.

Further, the Department of Telecommunications has agreed in principle to allocate 30 megahertz (MHz) of spectrum to support V2V communication.
