The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Reliance Jio (Jio) to roll out a mobile-based highway safety alert system that warns travelers about potential hazards in real time.

Using Jio’s 4G and 5G network, drivers on national highways will receive alerts on their phones as they approach accident-prone stretches, cattle-crossing zones, fog-hit areas, or emergency diversions. According to the ministry of Road Transport and Highways, these alerts will be delivered via SMS, WhatsApp, and high-priority calls.

The initial pilot will run under a few NHAI regional offices, helping refine risk-zone identification and alert thresholds. Officials said the system will adhere to all regulatory and data-protection requirements. The rollout will be integrated in phases with NHAI’s digital platforms, including the Rajmargyatra app and the emergency helpline 1033. Going forward, the authority will sign similar agreements with other telecom operators.

Additionally, the initial pilot deployment of the initiative will support risk-zone identification and alert thresholds under a few regional offices in NHAI. The initiative will fully comply with all applicable regulatory provisions and data-protection requirements. The initiative is expected to significantly enhance commuter awareness and reduce preventable road incidents.
