According to Finland-based Wirepas, India’s nationwide prepaid smart electricity meter rollout will finally allow decentralised internet of thing (IoT) infrastructure to scale in a meaningful way. The company highlighted that its approach separates hardware from connectivity software, giving utilities and advanced metering infrastructure service providers (AMISPs) the flexibility to choose devices based on their needs while still operating on a unified network.

AMISPs deploy smart meters either through direct contracts with state distribution companies (DISCOMs) or via nodal agencies. Private DISCOMs, by contrast, handle deployments on their own. Meanwhile, under the government’s programme, about 0.20 billion smart meters have been sanctioned across 28 states and union territories.
