TRAI releases independent drive test results conducted in 13 cities and routes in May 2025

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has conducted Independent Drive Tests (IDT) in thirteen cities, highway, railway and coastal area falling under Ranchi City and Latehar District, Ahmedabad City, Railway route from Ahmedabad to Bhavnagar, Coastal area at Ghogha Port, Bhavnagar, Panipat City, Una and Mandi City, Chikmagaluru City, Chennai City, Ayodhya City, Moradabad City, Highway from Dehradun to Badrinath. Drive tests were conducted to assess the quality of (like 2G/ 3G/ 4G/ 5G) for voice and data service provided by cellular mobile telephone service providers – Bharti Airtel Limited, Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, Vodafone Idea Limited (Vi), and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL)/ Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) – for voice and data services in May 2025. The observations presented in drive test reports represent the performance of the service providers on the area/ route under test on the day/time of conducting the drive test.

The key performance indicators (KPIs) for voice as well as data service assessed for the networks of all telecom service providers operating in the region included call setup success rate, drop call rate, speech quality using mean opinion score (MOS), downlink and uplink packet (voice) drop rate, call silence rate and coverage-signal strength, under voice services. Meanwhile, data throughput (downlink and uplink both), packet drop rate (downlink and uplink), video streaming delay, latency and jitter, under data services were considered.

Meanwhile, In Ranchi City and Latehar District – Bihar licensed service area (LSA), Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vi had call setup success rate of 100 per cent, 88.92 per cent, 98.60 per cent and 77.55 per cent respectively in auto-selection mode (5G/4G/3G/2G). Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vi had call setup time of 1.82, 3.93, 0.72 and 1.93 seconds respectively in auto-selection mode (5G/4G/3G/2G). Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vi had drop call rate of 0.29 per cent, 10.94 per cent, 0.28 per cent and 4.93 per cent respectively in auto-selection mode (5G/4G/3G/2G). Airtel, Jio and Vi had silence call rate 2.43 per cent, 1.95 per cent and 4.11 per cent respectively in packet switched network (5G/4G). Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vi had Average MOS of 3.97, 2.58, 3.88 and 4.44 respectively. Average download speed of Airtel (5G/4G/2G) is 112.14 Mbps, BSNL (4G/3G/2G) is 3.48 Mbps, Jio (5G/4G) is 224.77 Mbps and Vi (4G/2G) is 36.39 Mbps. Average upload speed of Airtel (5G/4G/2G) is 39.52 Mbps, BSNL (4G/3G/2G) is 3.76 Mbps, Jio (5G/4G) is 25.93 Mbps and Vi (4G/2G) is 13.06 Mbps.

Further, In Ahmedabad and nearby area – Gujarat LSA, Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vi had call setup success rate of 99.28 per cent, 84.77 per cent, 100 per cent and 99.88 per cent respectively in auto-selection mode (5G/4G/3G/2G). Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vi had call setup time of 1.40, 1.59, 0.70 and 0.80 seconds respectively in auto-selection mode (5G/4G/3G/2G). The companies had drop call rate of 0.12 per cent, 3.98 per cent, 0 per cent and 0.12 per cent respectively in auto-selection mode (5G/4G/3G/2G). Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vi had silence call rate of 0.18 per cent, 7.61 per cent, 0.18 per cent and 0.71 per cent respectively in packet switched network (4G/5G). Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vi had average MOS of 4.02, 3.03, 3.99 and 4.45 respectively. Average download speed of Airtel (5G/4G/2G) is 123.48 Mbps, BSNL (4G/3G/2G) is 6.81 Mbps, Jio (5G/4G) is 231.24 Mbps and Vi (4G/2G) is 46.21 Mbps. Average upload speed of Airtel (5G/4G/2G) is 22.58 Mbps, BSNL (4G/3G/2G) is 4.65 Mbps, Jio (5G/4G) is 41.04 Mbps and Vi (4G/2G) is 15.92 Mbps.

Furthermore, In Panipat city – Haryana LSA, Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vi had call setup success rate of 100.00 per cent, 99.36 per cent, 100.00 per cent and 99.20 per cent respectively in auto-selection mode (5G/4G/3G/2G). Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vi had call setup time of 1.23, 3.66, 0.68 and 2.46 seconds respectively in auto-selection mode (5G/4G/3G/2G). Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vi had drop call rate of 0.00 per cent, 2.41 per cent, 0.16 per cent and 0.00 per cent respectively in auto-selection mode (5G/4G/3G/2G). Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vi had silence call rate 0.57 per cent, 2.59 per cent, 0.39 per cent and 0.57 per cent respectively in packet switched network (4G/5G). Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vi had average MOS of 4.03, 2.22, 3.91 and 3.81 respectively. Average download speed of Airtel (5G/4G) is 181.72 Mbps, BSNL (4G/3G/2G) is 3.46 Mbps, Jio (5G/4G) is 255.02 Mbps and Vi (4G/2G) is 43.47 Mbps. Average upload speed of Airtel (5G/4G) is 37.02 Mbps, BSNL (4G/3G/2G) is 3.68 Mbps, Jio (5G/4G) is 21.79 Mbps and Vi (4G/2G) is 14.06 Mbps.

Moreover, In Una and Mandi City and nearby area – Himachal Pradesh LSA, Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vi had call setup success rate of 98.90 per cent, 93.29 per cent, 98.70 per cent and 95.48 per cent respectively in auto-selection mode (5G/4G/3G/2G). Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vi had call setup time of 1.28, 3.85, 0.76 and 2.15 seconds respectively in auto-selection mode (5G/4G/3G/2G). Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vi had drop call rate of 0.67 per cent, 15.69 per cent, 0.66 per cent and 2.03 per cent respectively in auto-selection mode (5G/4G/3G/2G). Airtel, Jio and Vi had silence call rate of 1.39 per cent, 2.14 per cent and 3.90 per cent respectively in packet switched network (4G/5G). Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vi had average MOS of 3.92, 2.61, 3.89 and 3.81 respectively. Average download speed of Airtel (5G/4G/2G) is 134.56 Mbps, BSNL (4G/3G/2G) is 3.25 Mbps, Jio (5G/4G) is 194.15 Mbps and Vi (4G/2G) is 15.88 Mbps. Average upload speed of Airtel (5G/4G/2G) is 19.07 Mbps, BSNL (4G/3G/2G) is 3.76 Mbps, Jio (5G/4G) is 18.89 Mbps and Vi (4G/2G) is 7.15 Mbps.

In addition, in Chikmagaluru City – Karnataka LSA, Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vi had call setup success rate of 95.91 per cent, 83.18 per cent, 96.89 per cent, and 73.81 per cent respectively in auto-selection mode (5G/4G/3G/2G). Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vi had call setup time of 1.34, 2.42, 0.76 and 1.57 seconds respectively in auto-selection mode (5G/4G/3G/2G). Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vi had drop call rate of 0.68 per cent, 6.56 per cent 0.34 per cent and 2.82 per cent respectively in auto-selection mode (5G/4G/3G/2G). Airtel, Jio and Vi had silence call rate of 4.17 per cent, 5.80 per cent and 7.78 per cent respectively in packet switched network (4G/5G). Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vi had average MOS of 3.93, 2.42, 3.77 and 3.84 respectively. Average download speed of Airtel (5G/4G) is 146.09 Mbps, BSNL (4G/3G) is 1.40 Mbps, Jio (5G/4G) is 159.77 Mbps and Vi (4G/2G) is 20.11 Mbps. Average upload speed of Airtel (5G/4G) is 27.24 Mbps, BSNL (4G/3G) is 2.60 Mbps, Jio (5G/4G) is 15.05 Mbps and Vi (4G/2G) is 10.47 Mbps.

In Chennai City – Tamil Nadu LSA, Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vi had call setup success rate of 100.00 per cent, 94.03 per cent, 100.00 per cent and 100.00 per cent respectively in auto-selection mode (5G/4G/3G/2G). Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vi had call setup time of 0.52, 1.74, 0.77 and 1.66 seconds respectively in auto-selection mode (5G/4G/3G/2G). Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vi had drop call rate of 0.00 per cent, 6.67 per cent, 0.16 per cent and 0.00 per cent respectively in auto-selection mode (5G/4G/3G/2G). Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vi had silence call rate 0.00 per cent, 5.71 per cent, 0.56 per cent and 0.55 per cent respectively in packet switched network (4G/5G). Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vi had average MOS of 4.02, 2.94, 3.95 and 4.47 respectively. Average download speed of Airtel (5G/4G) is 164.35 Mbps, BSNL (4G/3G/2G) is 4.44 Mbps, Jio (5G/4G) is 283.41 Mbps and Vi (4G/2G) is 31.80 Mbps. Average upload speed of Airtel (5G/4G) is 37.11 Mbps, BSNL (4G/3G/2G) is 3.34 Mbps, Jio (5G/4G) is 32.61 Mbps and Vi (4G/2G) is 18.57 Mbps.

Meanwhile, Ayodhya city – UP (East) LSA, Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vi had call setup success rate of 99.62 per cent, 97.05 per cent, 100.00 per cent and 98.87 per cent respectively in auto-selection mode (5G/4G/3G/2G). Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vi had call setup time of 1.21, 3.32, 0.68 and 0.59 seconds respectively in auto-selection mode (5G/4G/3G/2G). Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vi had drop call rate of 0.00 per cent, 0.36 per cent, 0.19 per cent and 0.00 per cent respectively in auto-selection mode (5G/4G/3G/2G). Airtel, Jio and Vi had silence call rate 0.56 per cent, 0.25 per cent and 2.48 per cent respectively in packet switched network (5G/4G). Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vi had average MOS of 3.99, 2.57, 3.93 and 4.34 respectively. Average download speed of Airtel (5G/4G) is 110.47 Mbps, BSNL (4G/3G) is 6.29 Mbps, Jio (5G/4G) is 196.10 Mbps and Vi (4G/2G) is 54.69 Mbps. Average upload speed of Airtel (5G/4G) is 29.32 Mbps, BSNL (4G/3G) is 5.03 Mbps, Jio (5G/4G) is 34.11 Mbps and Vi (4G/2G) is 20.07 Mbps.

Furthermore, Moradabad City and Highway: Dehradun to Badrinath – UP (West) LSA, Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vi had 96.34 per cent, 78.44 per cent, 98.77 per cent and 92.93 per cent Call setup success rate respectively in auto-selection mode (5G/4G/3G/2G). Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vi had Call setup time of 12.69, 3.57, 0.83 and 0.79 seconds respectively in auto-selection mode (5G/4G/3G/2G). Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vi had drop call rate 0.67 per cent, 4.09 per cent, 0.31 per cent and 0.75 per cent respectively in auto-selection  mode (5G/4G/3G/2G). Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vi had silence call rate 2.58 per cent, 2.39 per cent, 1.11 per cent and 2.27 per cent respectively in packet switched network (4G/5G). Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vi had average MOS of 4.01, 2.62, 3.87 and 4.45 respectively. Average download speed of Airtel (5G/4G/2G) is 122.50 Mbps, BSNL (4G/3G/2G) is 6.75 Mbps, Jio (5G/4G) is 190.11 Mbps and Vi (4G/2G) is 37.24 Mbps. Average upload speed of Airtel (5G/4G/2G) is 25.01 Mbps, BSNL (4G/3G/2G) is 4.94 Mbps, Jio (5G/4G) is 23.64 Mbps and Vi (4G/2G) is 15.80 Mbps.
