The Union finance ministry is reportedly weighing the introduction of a 10 per cent basic customs duty (BCD) on a critical category of mobile tower components through a revised product classification. The move is aimed at preventing the misuse of tariff exemptions and supporting domestic manufacturing.

Further, the policy review follows two major tax disputes involving Samsung India and Nokia Solutions, both of whom had claimed zero-duty benefits on importing these components. The government, however, views this as a case of misclassification of goods.
