The Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) has temporarily halted the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI) imposition of financial penalties exceeding Rs 1.41 billion on Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea Limited for their inability to manage spam communications effectively. In its ruling, TDSAT has prohibited TRAI from taking any punitive measures against these telecom operators until the next hearing set for February 13, 2025.

The telecom companies had earlier contested TRAI’s penalties, arguing that the regulator should not have imposed fines while an anti-spam platform was still under development. Conversely, TRAI maintained that the operators are obliged to comply with its directives, including the payment of fines.
