India is making significant strides in advancing 6G technology and has now positioned itself among the top six nations globally for 6G patent filings.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set a vision for India to be a leading contributor in the design, development, and deployment of 6G technology by 2030.

Under the ‘Bharat 6G Vision’, the government is currently assessing 470 proposals aimed at accelerating research on the 6G ecosystem. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has also financed two next-generation testbeds to support this research.

A government-led panel estimates that India could secure a 10 per cent share of global 6G patents and contribute one-sixth to global standards within the next three years. Various initiatives, including the ‘Bharat 6G Vision’ and ‘Bharat 6G Alliance’, have been launched, along with a framework for patent and intellectual property rights (IPR) support and the establishment of testbeds.

Industry experts emphasise that for India to emerge as a leader in deep-tech, it is crucial to enhance both wireline and intelligent wireless broadband networks with reliable connectivity.
