
According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the telephone subscriber base in India increased from 964.20 million at the end of November 2014 to 970.97 million at the end of December 2014, registering a monthly growth of 0.70 per cent.
The urban subscriber base increased from 568.72 million at the end of November 2014 to 572.29 million at the end of December 2014. Further, the rural subscriber base increased from 395.48 million to 398.68 million during the same period. As per TRAI, the overall teledensity increased from 77.12 at the end of November 2014 to 77.58 at the end of December 2014.
The country’s total wireless subscriber base increased from 937.06 million at the end of November 2014 to 943.97 million at the end of December 2014, registering a monthly growth of 0.74 per cent. The overall wireless teledensity in India reached 75.43 per cent as of end-December 2014.
As of December 2014, private operators held 91.01 per cent of the wireless market, while state-owned operators – Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited held the remaining 8.99 per cent.
Further, TRAI has reported a broadband subscriber base of 85.74 million as of December 2014, registering a monthly growth of 4.25 per cent over 82.22 million subscribers in November 2014.
Meanwhile, in December 2014, 3.49 million subscribers submitted their requests under the mobile number portability (MNP) service, taking the cumulative MNP requests to 142.98 million at the end of December 2014.
