Idea Cellular has awarded a three-year contract to Finland-based telecom equipment manufacturer Nokia Networks to upgrade its existing 2G and 3G networks in the country. Under this deal, the entire equipment of 2G and 3G technologies will be provided by Nokia Networks. This follows an agreement signed by both companies in 2013, under which Nokia Networks is providing project management, care and maintenance services.
Earlier in 2010, the vendor had deployed 3G network for Idea Cellular in four circles ? Uttar Pradesh (East), Uttar Pradesh (West), Kerala and Haryana. At present, the operator holds 3G spectrum in 12 circles across the country including Delhi where it has acquired spectrum in the 900 MHz band in the recently concluded spectrum auctions.
