The construction unit of India?s leading engineering and construction company, Larsen and Toubro (L&T) Limited has secured a contract worth Rs 24.42 billion from state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited. The scope of the project involves supply, trenching, laying, installation, testing and commissioning of optical fibre cable (OFC) network which will establish an exclusive national long-distance backbone and optical access routes for the defence network. BSNL is the implementing agency for the project. 

L&T would be required to cover OFC routes in central and southern India. The project will be undertaken on a turnkey basis, and the nationwide OFC network will be owned and operated by the defence services.

The project is scheduled to be completed within 18 months.
