Companies manufacturing or importing mobile phones for sale in India will have to ensure that the handsets are compliant with the new radiation norms beginning September 2013.

As per the new rules defined by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), the exposure of radiation emitted from a mobile phone over a gram of human tissue should not be more than 1.6 watt if a consumer uses the handset for six months. The mobile manufacturers will have to display radiation emitted from mobile phones on the handset in terms of specific absorption rate.

According to DoT, following the implementation of the new radiation norms, handset manufacturers will not be allowed to sell fresh stock of the non-compliant mobile phones. However, they will be permitted to sell the old stock of the non-compliant handsets.

Meanwhile, Bureau of Indian Standards is working on finalising specific norms which will provide grounds for seizure of non-compliant handsets being sold in the market.
