According to Akamai Technologies, the average internet connectivity speed in India is likely to increase to 1.8 Mbps over 12 months. The key growth drivers for this are new investments in high-speed fibre network and affordable data plans.

The company points out that in the first quarter of 2013, India had connectivity speed of 1.3 Mbps. In comparison the country witnessed an average speed of 1.0 Mbps in the first quarter of 2012. Further, the connectivity speed in providing the last mile access (to homes) has witnessed an increase over the last few months in the country. The increase has been on account of service providers and cable operators laying down high speed fibre cables to homes and apartments and offering high connection speed data plans, especially in urban areas.
Currently, corporates too are upgrading their connectivity speed for keeping up with the higher demand for bandwidth. Going forward, Akamai Technologies expects a further increase in connectivity speeds in Tier II and Tier III cities besides Tier I, given higher investments from service providers and the increasing number of users accessing internet from mobile phones.
