
According to Canalys, the global shipment of smart mobile device (notebook, tablet and smartphone) has exceeded 308.7 million units in the first quarter of 2013, representing an year-on-year growth of 37.4 per cent.
For the first quarter of 2013 the operating system segment is led by the Open Handset Alliance followed by Android which has a market share of 59.5 per cent. Other vendors like Apple has a market share of 19.3 per cent followed by Microsoft which has a market share of Microsoft?s 18.1 per cent in the Smartphone and PC market.
Of the three segments, notebook, tablet and smart phone, the tablet market continues to grow the fastest. Worldwide, tablet shipments registered a growth of 106.1 per cent year-on-year to reach 41.9 million units in the first quarter of 2013. Though Apple continues to lead the tablet space with a 46.4 per cent market share, the company continues to lose market share to the Android-based players for the third consecutive quarter. The smartphone shipment for the period under consideration reached 216.3 million units registering a growth of 47.9 per cent. The Android-based handsets accounted for 75.6 per cent of the total smartphone shipments. Samsung led the market with a volume growth of 64.3 per cent year-on-year, taking its market share to 32 per cent. In comparison, Apple registered modest annual growth of 6.7 per cent in its smart phone shipments ? the lowest level since the launch of the original iPhone in 2007. Huawei, LG and ZTE feature in the list of top five vendors in the first quarter of 2013.
Notebook PC shipments reached 50.5 million units in the first quarter of 2013 thereby registering a decline of 13.1 per cent for the corresponding period in 2012. The biggest decline in the shipment of PC notebooks was registered in Europe, where shipments declined by 25.2 per cent on an annual basis.
