According to the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), foreign direct investment (FDI) in the telecom sector stood at $43 million in the April-September 2012 period, say news reports.

In comparison, FDI in the telecom sector, which includes radio paging, cellular mobile, basic telephone services, stood at $1.9 billion in April-September 2011.

DIPP has attributed this decline to not just the economic slowdown, which has impacted the inflows, but to the long-standing issues facing the telecom sector.
