Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) have decided not to participate in the forthcoming spectrum auction scheduled for November, say news reports.

Both companies have taken this decision keeping in mind their poor financial health. Recently, both BSNL and MTNL approached the government to surrender their existing broadband wireless access licences. Also, both operators claim that they already have the required spectrum and need not bid for more.

Another important factor driving this decision is the high base price set by the government for the spectrum.
