According to Ericsson, India and China accounted for around 40 per cent of the estimated 140 million net additions in mobile subscriptions globally between April and June, 2012.

Globally, mobile subscriptions during the period stood at 6.3 billion. However, the report from Ericsson highlights that the actual number of subscribers is estimated to be around 4.3 billion, since many users have multiple subscriptions.

As per the report, at the end of August 2012, the global penetration of mobile phones stood at 89 per cent. About 40 per cent of all mobile phones sold in April-June, 2012, were smartphones as compared to 30 per cent for 2011.

However, with only 15 per cent of the worldwide installed base of subscriptions being for smartphones, the report estimates significant scope of growth in subscriptions for the smartphones. The data from the report suggests that the mobile broadband subscriptions have grown around 60 per cent year-on-year and stood at 1.2 billion for April-June 2012.

According to the report, the voice traffic continues to grow at a steady rate. It is being driven by new subscriptions in Asia Pacific and Middle East and Africa.
