The Department Of Telecommunications (DoT) has recommended that all government ministries, (except the Ministry of Defence) public sector units and public-private partnerships should proactively use locally manufactured telecom equipments, say news reports.
It has identified about 56 security sensitive telecom products. These include SIM cards, modems, set-top boxes, routers and leased line equipment amongst others.
Earlier, DoT had accepted the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India?s recommendation on telecom operators securing 80 per cent of security sensitive telecom equipment locally by 2020. With its new set of recommendations, DoT aims to encourage local manufacturing of telecom equipment and electronics in the country.
