The Telecom regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has defended its recommendations related to auction of 122 2G license before Joint Parliamentary Commission (JPC).

Appearing before JPC, Rahul Khullar, chief, TRAI defended the recommendation to auction 2G spectrum at a base price of Rs 36.22 million for a MHz of spectrum at pan-India level. This base price is around10 times higher than the price for 2G licences auctioned in 2008.

TRAI has also assured JPC that the consumers would not be affected owing to the high base price set by TRAI for the spectrum auction. It argued that the tariff hike will be incremental, not more than Re 0.04 per minute.
