All telecom operators have started the process of disconnecting inactive numbers, including prepaid vouchers with lifetime validity, say news reports.
Such offerings are disabled on grounds of non-activity for two months or more. A new set of conditions have been specified for first-time users.
Prior to this, when first introduced, no usage conditions existed for such schemes.
Commenting on this, Rajan Mathews, director general, Cellular Operators? Association of India (COAI) said, ?There won?t be any future lifetime schemes from operators. When these schemes were introduced, it was an era of high mobile tariffs. Now, with such low tariffs, nobody would be willing to pay a fixed amount in advance for lifetime numbers.?
This is part of the Department of Telecommunications? (DoT) efforts to identify and disconnect all inactive users. Once completed, DoT will allot the operators a new numbering series.
