The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is planning to de-license the 433 Mhz frequency band, on the request of several agencies, including the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai and Indraprastha Gas Limited.
These utilities are looking to use this spectrum band. Once DoT approves their request, the agencies will not have to send their agents to their customer’s homes to obtain a meter reading on a monthly basis. They will be able to retrieve the data using smart metering technology.
Also, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has also asked DoT whether it can use this band for anti-theft devices to be fitted in motor vehicles. Such devices will enable consumers and security agencies to locate stolen cars.
An internal note prepared by DoT?s Wireless Planning Coordination wing on this issue stated, ?We may consider de-licensing the 433-434 Mhz frequency band on a non-interference, non-protection and non-exclusive basis.?
