The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has rejected Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited?s (BSNL) proposal to reduce its workforce by 21,000. DoT had said the number was too low, keeping in mind the company?s financial status.

Prior to this, DoT had asked BSNL to chalk out a revised plan for reducing its headcount through various schemes, including a voluntary retirement scheme (VRS). DoT is of the view that BSNL needs to reduce its workforce by 1,00,000.

This is part of the government?s initiatives to revive the operator. BSNL?s employee base is about 2,80,000 and it has been facing several issues, including high employee cost, declining revenues and low tariffs.
