Speaking out against Kapil Sibal, Minister of Telecommunications and IT?s view that the Comptroller and Auditor General of India?s (CAG) report was baseless, Murli Manohar Joshi, Chairman, Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has asked whether Sibal actually read the report. He added that the CAG report has made use of three models to reach the Rs 1.76 trillion loss figure.
Taking a strong stance, he said the Minister should not have made such a statement, given that the PAC was also scrutinising the report.
On January 7, 2011, Kapil Sibal had said that the Comptroller and Auditor General of India?s (CAG) estimate of a Rs 1.76 trillion loss to the exchequer on account of the 2G spectrum scam and licence allocation was baseless and erroneous. He added that there were no actual losses to the exchequer.
Thereafter, Sibal?s statement came under severe criticism by Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) and Arun Jaitley, senior leader, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). While Chandrasekhar termed it as an insult to the intelligence of the people of India and media, Jaitley asked why A. Raja, former Minister of Communications and IT was forced to resign if the loss to the exchequer was indeed fictitious.
