DoT has directed all operators to obtain security clearance for procuring telecom equipment and software from foreign vendors.
The directive has also mandated that equipment vendors transfer technology to Indian manufacturers within three years of selling their machines to any operator. Earlier, only Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) were required to obtain a clearance, while private operators used to conduct their own due diligence when ordering equipment. Operators will now need to wait for 30 days to receive clearances before purchasing any telecom equipment.
