BSNL has tied up with HCL Infosystems to work on the National Broadband Penetration Programme (NBPP) aimed at accelerating the uptake of information technology in the most remote parts of the country. According to the scheme, to be funded through the Universal Service Obligation (USO) Fund, a subsidy of Rs 4,500 per broadband connection will be provided to BSNL. For its part, HCL will offer subsidised computer hardware, as well as set up four call centres, two each for enquiries and technical support. For the PC, subscribers will have to pay Rs 2,250 as initial fee and Rs 399 per month. Post-subsidy, the cost of the broadband service will be between Rs 99 and Rs 150 per month.
