Acommittee set up to resolve the controversy surrounding the allocation of spectrum to telecom operators has suggested that operators should be allowed to share and transfer spectrum amongst themselves for a certain fee. An operator will have to pay the government Rs 5.45 billion for using every MHz of spectrum belonging to another operator. Besides, in the event of a merger and acquisition (M&A) deal, the government will get Rs 5.45 billion for every MHz of airwave that is transferred to the buyer on a pan-Indian basis. This fee will have to be borne by the operator that sells out.
