TRAI has suggested exploring the possibility of allotting 3G spectrum to more than one CDMA mobile operator. There are four CDMA-based mobile players in the country for whom DoT is yetto specify the road map for adopting 3G technology. As of now, DoT is planning to auction spectrum to only one CDMA player, as it does not have enough spectrum to accommodate more players. However, the regulator has suggested that optimum utilisation of spectrum in the 800 MHz band by existing users could free up enough spectrum for one more player.
