Hong Kong’s telecom regulator, Office of the Telecommunications Authority, has shortlisted five companies for its upcoming wireless broadband licence auction. These are China Mobile Hong Kong, which offers mobile services in Hong Kong under the Peoples brand; CSL, a representative company of domestic cellular operator CSL New World Mobility; Genius Brand, which is indirectly owned by Hutchison Telephone Company and Hong Kong Telecommunications; Hong Kong Broadband Network, the broadband arm of domestic operator City Telecom; and SmarTone Wireless, a subsidiary of Hong Kong-based operator SmarTone Telecommunications. A total of 195 MHz of wireless broadband spectrum (90 MHz in the 2.3 GHz band and 105 MHz in the 2.5 GHz-2.6 GHz bands) will be auctioned in January 2009. Licensees will be allowed to provide fixed, mobile voice or data services, or a combination of these.
