TRAI has directed all mobile operators to provide interconnectivity to Reliance Communications (RCOM). The move comes after existing GSM operators refused to offer interconnectivity to RCOM on the grounds that the latter’s GSM network was part of a new licence and it would therefore have to negotiate fresh terms with companies like Bharti Airtel and Vodafone. TRAI has, however, held that RCOM’s GSM network was part of the unified access service licence, which allows the company to offer CDMAbased mobile services and hence, there is no need for renegotiating the interconnection terms.
