Flag Telecom has awarded a $1.5 billion turnkey contract to Japan’s Fujitsu. As per the contract, Fujitsu will construct Flag Telecom’s next-generation network submarine cable. The contract will involve the construction of four new cable systems across Asia, East Africa, and the Mediterranean and Pacific regions. With the new cable systems, Flag Telecom’s global network will increase from 65,000 km to 115,000 km. The company will be able to extend its reach to connect 60 countries. The project, which is expected to be completed by 2009-10, will create capacity to carry 2.5 billion simultaneous voice calls, 300 million simultaneous web chats and 52 million simultaneous video chats.
