Qualcomm chief Paul Jacobs, on a recent visit to India, refused to lower the royalty rates on its patented CDMA products in India, saying that they were among the lowest in the world. According to US-based Qualcomm, the rates are actually below 5 per cent and not 7 per cent as reported. Instead, in order to make CDMA services more affordable, the company is proposing local manufacturing of handsets and is considering reinvesting the royalty it receives from India into enhancing the country’s R&D.
