Following initial resistance by DoT, it has been decided to set up a special group of ministers (GoM) to resolve the contentious spectrum issue. This decision follows the intervention of the Planning Commission and the Prime Minister’s Office. TRAI too is of the opinion that this is a necessary step to sort out the issues related to spectrum as it was beyond DoT’s reach to negotiate with the defence ministry for vacating spectrum. Earlier, DoT officials and the communications minister had shot down the idea of a GoM on spectrum.
