LG Electronics Inc., South Korea’s second largest electronics L manufacturer, has successfully tested an ultra-fast wireless phone with its Canadian project partner, Nortel Networks Corrporation.

The test run, conducted in Nortel’s research lab in France, uses a new wireless broadband technology called a high speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) network. The HSDPA system, known as a 3.5-generation mobile technology, can transmit data at a maximum speed of 14 megabits per second, allowing customers to watch live TV streaming and other mobile broadband services via their handsets. In January, LG Electronics signed a memorandum of understanding with Nortel Networks to form a telecom equipment joint venture in South Korea.
