Akamai Technologies has appointed the company’s co-founder and chief scientist, Dr. Tom Leighton as the chief executive officer (CEO).

Dr. Leighton will succeed Paul Sagan who will step down as the CEO of the company from January, 2013. However, Sagan will continue to serve as a director on the company’s board of directors. He will closely work with Dr. Leighton on the company’s business strategy and to ensure a smooth management transition.

Since co-founding Akamai Technologies in 1998, Dr. Leighton has been one of the principal architects of the company’s strategy and management decisions while serving as chief scientist, as a member of Akamai’s Technologies senior executive team, and on the board of directors.
